 Tip # 7

Genetically modified ingredients are widely used in processed foods. If you are concerned with GMO’s you have two options: 1. Buy organic, or 2. Become an avid ingredient list reader. You can find some of the ingredient names to look out for here - "Ingredients to look Out For." (the fridge guide included in this post is very helpful).

Allison Jorgens is a Professional Home Economist holding a degree in nutritional sciences. She has been working as a food label specialist for grocers and food manufactures in Canada for nearly a decade. Over the past ten years, Allison has reviewed thousands of food labels for many of Canada’s leading private-label grocery brands, large and small manufacturers, distributors, and a variety of importers. It is this wide-ranging experience in regulatory-compliance label reviews that makes her knowledge unique—and her perspective all the more shocking. As a concerned parent and advocate of leading a healthful lifestyle, Allison recommends that all consumers empower themselves with the knowledge needed to make more healthful and informed choices.

Allison sits on the board of directors of The Food Label Movement and the Ontario Home Economics Association. She is a proud member of the Ontario Home Economics Association, Ontario Home Economists in Business Association, Prince Edward Island Home Economics Association, and sits on the advisory council for Eating Disorders of York Region.

April 2013 30 Day Challenge Participant List

I was asked to continue the 30 Day Challenge into April and so on April fool's day, joking aside we embark on our new 30 Day Challenge IV.  The Challenge consists of a nutritional challenge and one other change, you get to pick what. For instance, if you want to break a bad habit or introduce a good habit, this challenge is for you. The challenge will provide suggestions on how to overcome and as in all the other changes, perfection is not the goal, but being intentional. A 30 Day focus can eradicate a bad habit and set another in place!

Check with your physician or health care provider that you are clear to participate. I am not a doctor or a health care professional and advice on this site is not meant to take the place of your health provider or doctor's advice. Check with your doctor if you have pre-existing medical conditions that might be affected by your nutritional commitment.

I would like to welcome all the participants and introduce them to you! Tomorrow I will post the nutritional commitment of each participant. Every body is different and we all have very individualized goals! Tip #6 from Igor and your "get out of jail" card

Igor Klibanov is CEO of Fitness Solutions Plus and he has another tip for us.

Tip 6: Cardio is good, but don't do too much of it, and don't do it exclusively. A lot of people run into problems when they start doing cardio more than 3 times per week for 30 minutes, or if that's all they do. The problem: they start to put on body fat. Surprise! To understand why doing excessive and exclusive cardio can make you put on body fat, read this article: Aerobic exercise can make you fat

YOUR "GET OUT OF JAIL" CARD

I am still off coffee! Headaches are diminishing by the day, but by day end there is a dull ache that is rather annoying! Considering at one point I was drinking up to 10 cups of espresso in a day (There I confessed!) it is not surprising that it is taking so long to clear out of my system.

So we made it to day 14! Now what?

I have a surprise for you! This applies to day 14 - day 30 and you can use this ONCE!!!
ONCE ONLY LADIES, if you choose to. It is kinda like a "get out of jail" card. Not that you actually are in jail if you eat something you shouldn't, but sometimes we feel like we are. For those of you taking the challenge seriously (and seeing amazing results, I might add) you will love this!

I realize that once you get to focusing on replacing a few things on the replacement list....you sometimes get something that is dairy and wheat free, but has a little sugar, or it is sugar and grain free, but has dairy, or it has wheat, but no dairy or sugar....you get the idea?
NO STRESS........this "get out of jail " card will help you out there.....

OR

You go to a friend for dinner and they are serving ALL the things on your list you can't eat. What to do? Are you going to stress? No, you are going to make the best choices you can and use your "get out of jail " card.

This is how it works, to use your get out of jail card, you have to do this:

  1. Eat a salad with vinaigrette dressing first.
  2. Eat your protein and vegetables first.
  3. Eat whatever you want....yes WHATEVER......
  4. Abide by the "once my butt leaves the seat the meal is OVER" rule. NO going back for seconds!
  5. Report back to me.

That is it, then you have used up your one time, EAT WHATEVER, get out of jail card!

How does that sound to you? You may want to save that up for when you are really in a quandary as to what to eat, or you are at the end of the month and the budget is short. You can use it when you are invited out to dinner, or there is a special occasion.

BUT....YOU HAVE TO ABIDE BY THE RULES STIPULATED. (See rules 1 - 5 above in green)

For those of you on the challenge I want you to think about something. Some of you have reported in saying...."I stuck to not eating white carbs, except for eating such and such..." or you "mostly avoided such and such." Now stop and think about that for a moment, did you stick to it, or didn't you? I am not talking about the things you are working on reducing, but the things you have committed to replacing on the challenge. Some of you have eliminated EVERYTHING on the list, and wow, you will know what it is like to eat whole foods, since everything else has those things in it that you can't eat. I know it is not easy.

If there is and "except for" in your thinking I want to encourage you towards avoiding the "almost did it" mentality in the next 14 days. Tighten up your micro amounts of things creeping in JUST for the next 14 days. I have every confidence that you can do it, if you decide to. All it takes is a decision.

I will be doing it too, don't worry, so let's tighten up our standards and it will pay off. You are not alone in this, you have the support of your friends and family and of course, fellow participants.

For the full list of replacement foods on this challenge, click here.  Please note that I have added Sodium to the list, not to replace it, but to be aware of how much you consume and to work towards reducing it if you are having too much.

Celebrate with us!

Happy Anniversary to me, and
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to
Fitnesstraniningforlifeandadventures.

This BLOG is one year old!
It all started a year ago when I started training with Igor Klibanov to ready me for a trip to Siberia in winter. You can read about it here.
There was no waiting for "new year" to start on the nutrition plan and there was no waiting for after New Year to hit the gym. With only 8 weeks before the trip, I had no time to waste.

Some of the highlights of this year have been:
A New look at my morning coffee,  and I set foot in the gym for the first time in years, with a little bit of fear and trepidation. I started a nutritional program that brought me freedom from binging and sugar addiction. We discussed sleep and it's effect on you. In February we talked about surviving Valentine's day without damaging your healthy eating habit. We had some interesting "before and after" shots. Along the way we learned about Labels on foods and to identify hidden sugars and carbs. I went on my trip to Russia and saw Red Square, St. Basil's Cathedral (Moscow) and walked 11km across Lake Baikal in Siberia.
Moscow 2012 Christ the Savior Cathedral.

Exploring how to have burgers without the bun was a load of fun! For me the biggest relevation was the effect sugar has on me, and I discovered that I was just like these rats. ARE YOU A RAT? Click here to find out. On my birthday I had a sugar free cake, and it was delicious! (more like an ice- cream cake without the ice cream) Then I discovered smoothies and came up a few recipes of my own! This one was one of my favourites : Black Cherry and Swiss Chard Smoothie and we discussed the merits of mint.
Oodles of noodles in a tutorial on how to make zucchini noodles. The flour and sugar free brownies were a hit. We discussed the flinch effect and and the sugar cycle. I posted my thoughts while sitting on a park bench. October saw many recipes with pumpkin including a pumpkin spice Latte. Then I introduced Spelt to my diet and came up with this delicious french toast.
When it got too chilly for icy smoothies, I came up with a post workout alternative! POWER PUDDING!

November saw a great result in the TOP 25 Blogs competition. Thanks again for all your support!
To follow up with this we had a 30 Day Challenge which got us moving, accountable and 15 ladies participated from all over the world.

So we come to the end of a year and it has been quite a journey. No I do not eat perfectly all the time, I am not a health freak, I just like to make the best choices I can for my health and happiness. Yes I sometimes stumble and eat things that are not the best for me, but I no longer lose control because I now know about the chemistry processes that go on in my body and how they effect my metabolism. Prevention is a good weapon against the fight against unhealthy habits and if you see imperfect eating as just a little slip and put it behind you and move on, learning from your experiences then you can get over the  "I have messed up, I might as well eat badly for the rest of the say and start again tomorrow" mentality.   I have learnt not to fall for that one anymore! Make your choices one at a time! You don't win them all, but you certainly don't have to give up just because you slip up once. Be compassionate to yourself, we are in it for the long haul, it is about a lifestyle that is sustainable.

As we get to the end of the year this is my wish for you:
May you have a wonderful start to the New Year.
